# Manage the number of characters and words in your data

Manage the number of characters and words in your product data in Productsup.

## Introduction

Specific rule boxes let you manage the number of characters, words, and category path product data. For example, you may want to count the number of characters or words to meet specific marketplace character length limits. When managing characters or word count limits, you can also remove unwanted characters or words beyond a specific limit.

## Count words

To count the number of words in a field, use the Word count rule box. This rule box returns the number of words in the data. For instructions on how to add a rule box, see Add a rule box.

1. Add the Word count rule box in Data View.

## Remove last words from your data

You can remove the last words from your data using the Cut last words rule box. This rule box is useful if you have a set word limit in an export field. For example, if you can only use a maximum of 70 characters in a title, use the Cut last words rule box.

1. Add the Cut last words rule box in Data View.

2. Define and enter a character limit in numbers. For example, enter 70.

3. The Cut last words rule box removes whole words from the data that exceed this character limit..

## Count characters

You can count the number of characters in a field by using the character count rule box. This rule box returns the number of characters in the data.

1. Add the Character count rule box in Data View.

## Cut the first characters from your data

The Cut first characters rule box works similarly to the Cut last characters rule box but removes the first characters from your data.

1. Add the Cut first characters rule box in Data View.

2. Define and enter a character limit in numbers. For example, enter 100.

3. The rule box removes any characters up to this character limit.

## Cut the last characters from your data

You can cut the last words from the data by using the Cut last characters rule box. This rule box may be useful if you have a specific limit for an export field. For example, if you can only use a max of 70 characters for the title, it performs a hard cut at your specified limit. This means that it can cut words in half.

1. Add the Cut last characters rule box in Data View.

2. Define and enter a character limit in numbers. For example, enter 100. The rule box removes any characters beyond this character limit.

### Note

If you add a positive character limit, for example, 100, the rule box cuts the last characters above this limit.

## Trim data to Google’s max character limit

Google requires that the title attribute contains fewer than 150 characters and that the brand attribute contains less than 70 characters.

To confirm that your title meets specifications set by Google, you can use the Trim to 150 characters rule box. This rule box removes all characters beyond the 150 limit.

1. Add the Trim to 150 characters rule box in Data View.

1. Add the Trim to 70 characters rule box in Data View.

## Trim the last category paths

If your category path is too long and you wish to remove the last categories beyond a specific character limit, you can use the Trim Category Tree rule box. This rule box removes the last categories at the delimiter > if the length exceeds the input limit.

1. Add the Trim Category Tree rule box in Data View.

2. Define and enter a character limit, in numbers, for the categories you want to remove. For example, enter 100.

For example, for trimming a category path after the 50th character, see the following results:

• Input - Housewares > Linens & Bedding > Bedding > Bed Sheets

• Output - Housewares > Linens & Bedding > Bedding > Housewares > Linens & Bedding > Bedding
